Nello Del Gallo born in Cortona in 1899 was the designer and builder of the original portion of Villa Sant’Angelo in Cortona. Nello was a man that perfectly fit in the early 1900s and popular Italy. His history is very interesting and we will provide here you with a brief summary of it. At only seventeen Nello was a soldier in the Italian army in World War I and actively participated in the resistance on the Piave river against the Austrian army. For this reason he was awarded the title of Cavaliere di Vittorio Veneto.
After the war Nello took up service for the Italian state in the Guardia di Finanza (financial police) from which he retired only in the 1950s with the rank of marshal.
Back to Cortona after decades of service in the port areas of Romagna Nello devoted the rest of his life to the construction of Villa Sant’Angelo that he designed and built with his very hands.
In the early 1980s his son Angiolo whom gusts may ask for further interesting details of his father’s life, carried out extensive restoration work on Villa Sant’Angelo in Cortona safeguarding the original portion with the approval and much to the happiness of father Nello that passed away in 1987.
